Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) has partnered with European firms Enedis, Schneider Electric, Odit-e and VaasaETT to implement a 1MW smart grid demonstration project in Delhi, which would be insulated from any blackout in the main grid.
This microgrid will cater to a specific area that could be connected to main grid or can be at an isolated place. It will help store and supply renewable energy generation in the area and insulate the area from any outage or fluctuation in the main grid.
The project is planned to start in May this year and is expected to be completed by October 2022.
“In common parlance, this microgrid is in a way islanding of a specific area for power supply. After the grid failure in 2012, the government has been working on the islanding project for Delhi. However, this demonstrative project would be for a specific area covering around 1000 households,” Tata Power-DDL CEO Sanjay Kumar Banga was quoted as saying by PTI while sharing the details.
The project would either be implemented in Civil Lines or Pitampura in Delhi,” he said.
The project will implement three use cases on dedicated sections of Tata Power-DDL’s distribution network, which include maximising local consumption of renewable energy sources generation, boosting the consumption of local energy with an adapted demand side management and improving the resilience of the local energy system through islanding capability of the microgrid in case of an outage within the area.
The overall project budget is €10.7 million with €7.9 million grant from the European Commission.
Through the collaboration, 15 partners from eight European countries (including distribution system operators, industrial and research centres) and Tata Power-DDL from India will join forces in IELECTRIX (Indian and European Local Energy CommuniTies for Renewable Integration and Energy Transition) with IT-based, innovative product and solution providers, and technology and research centres to demonstrate innovative concepts for network flexibilization. These measures include demonstration of the potential of mobile storage concepts as well as numerous scenarios for optimal integration of decentralized renewable energy sources. In this project, the eco-energy country also serves as a pilot region, where different applications and scenarios are demonstrated.
“At Tata Power-DDL, we continually strive to integrate new technologies for strengthening our network to provide reliable and quality power supply to our consumers,” said Sanjay Banga, CEO of Tata Power-DDL. “The model Indian Smart Grid Demonstrator will address our key challenges in the areas of adapted demand side management, system resilience and more consumption of renewable energy sources.”
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi. It distributes electricity in North and North-West parts of Delhi and serves a populace of 7 million.
