A Kauai utility is seeking to pay developers and eventually power subscribers for the renewable energy they generate and support.
The Garden Island reports Kauai Island Utility Cooperative sent out a request for proposals last week looking for developers who want to build a renewable energy facility.
The utility is planning to launch the community-based renewable energy program, which would allow customers to receive compensation for participating in eligible renewable energy projects that provide electricity and electric services.
CEO David Bissell says the program aims to be another option for residents to access renewable energy without having to install solar panels on their property. The first phase will be geared for developers, but the utility hopes to bring in subscribers next year.
