Hyundai officials told media at the New York Auto Show preview that the new 2019 Kona Electric Small SUV will feature a generous 250-mile driving range before the need for a recharge. That estimate outpaces standard ranges for Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3. Hyundai’s 2019 Kona Electric subcompact crossover SUV, built in Ulsan, South Korea, will reach California dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2018. It will also be available early next year in states with ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mandates on the East and West Coasts.
Built on Hyundai’s all-new crossover platform, the U.S.-bound Kona Electric Small SUV looks similar to its gasoline-powered variant except that it features a plain pattern in front rather than a grille. Body styling is low with a wide stance and the interior is stylish and roomy. New “extrovert” paint colors will be offered for the Kona EV variant, including Ceramic Blue and Pulse Red.
Hyundai’s 2019 Kona Electric is powered by an electric motor that sends the equivalent of 201 horsepower and 291 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels with energy provided by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. A choice of three drive modes can be selected, including Normal, Eco and Sport. Another feature for the new EV is that an 80% fast-charge can be achieved in 54 minutes with a combo-charging port.
The cabin of the 2019 Kona Electric Small SUV, is equipped with a standard infotainment system with floating touchscreen plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interconnectivity. Interior space for five in the small electric crossover also includes 19.2 cu. ft. of cargo room, which is the same space as in the gasoline-powered Kona.
Hyundai offers a Smart Sense group of advanced safety systems for the Kona Electric compact SUV that features forward collision avoidance, lane keep assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist and driver attention warning system. Optional premium technology also features an 8-in. navigation system, wireless charging, a head-up display with pop-up screen and rain sense wipers.
